Brand building used to be about control. Package the message. Police the tone. Approve the content. Create. Control. Distribute.
That playbook’s expired.
In 2025, brand isn’t what you say. It’s what they say. And if you're still thinking you “own” your brand — you’re already behind.
As a former Head of Brand & Social who has worked for iconic brands like LinkedIn, EY and WestJet let’s talk about the rise of audience-owned brands, personal leverage, and co-created ecosystems in 2025.
1. YOUR BRAND – YOU DON’T OWN IT.
You might have the trademark. But you don’t have the traction unless you have the audience. And they decide what your brand means. Not your tagline. Not your logo. Them. That’s why clarity matters. Invest in social listening, get honest about who you are and what you want — so your audience can recognize themselves in your story.
“You can’t manufacture meaning anymore. You have to earn it — one post, one reply, one real moment at a time.” - Christina Minshull, CEO – The Brand Audit
2. BURN YOUR BRAND GUIDELINES.
In a creator-led world, “guidelines” are a bottleneck. What you need are guardrails — space to experiment while staying true to the essence. Flexibility isn’t a risk. It’s the strategy. The brands winning today are adaptive, not rigid. Think evolving tone, multi-format expression, and context-driven creativity.
3. DON’T BUILD A BRAND – BUILD WITH THEM.
The audience doesn’t want to be “spoken to.” They want to be part of the process.
Co-create. Collaborate. Social listen. Your job isn’t to launch a product to them. It’s to build something with them. The most future-fit brands don’t just talk community — they operationalize it.
“Put down the megaphone and put on the headphones. You need to broadcast less and listen more to be an effective brand” - Christina Minshull – CEO, The Brand Audit
4. DISTRIBUTION IS THE NEW BRAND EQUITY.
No visibility? No value.
Your reach is your reputation. And distribution is no longer a media buy. It’s a content strategy, a personal brand, a daily practice. Personal brand is the fast lane. It builds leverage. And leverage? That’s what buys you optionality.
“You don’t need more ads. You need more attention — earned, not rented.”
— Christina Minshull, CEO – The Brand Audit
5. GIVE THEM A WORLD TO BELONG TO.
Strong brands don’t just tell stories. They create worlds.
Think ecosystem, not identity. Culture, not campaigns. People don’t buy brands. They join movements. If your brand feels like a broadcast, it’s not big enough.
6. REAL TRUST LIVES BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.
The front-end is your showroom. The DMs are where the trust is built. Private group chats, micro-communities, community circles — this is where modern brand loyalty is forged. And it’s often where the insights hit before they show up in the data.
7. VOLUME ISN’T VANITY – IT’S STRATEGY.
2025 is not about perfection. It’s about reps. Quantity builds quality. Consistency compounds. The faster you test, the faster you learn. The best content teams are high-frequency, low-ego, and deeply experimental.
8. GEN Z IS ANTI-TRADITIONAL MEDIA
Younger generations trust people over platforms. Creators over corporations. TikTok over TV. They want nuance, not narratives. Truths, not taglines. Your media strategy needs to meet them where they are — and evolve with them.
Brands, let go of control. Build something people want to opt into. You Don’t Own Your Brand. Your Audience Does. The faster you accept that, the faster you grow.
